The Communication Studies (COMS) Major (B.S.) provides students with an experiential learning environment in which they can develop critical understanding, appreciation, and strategic application of the symbolizing processes which form and mobilize human activity, including but not limited to spoken, written, and nonverbal communication in interpersonal, public, and professional contexts. The major is guided by theoretical, practical, aesthetic, and ethical models; fosters respect for cultural diversity in all its forms; and values dialogic communication in an increasingly international marketplace and intercultural global community by: enhancing students’ sense of personal worth, ability to problem-solve individually and collaboratively, and social responsibility to others far beyond the university, local and regional communities. The degree establishes for students a well-supported pathway to successful, productive careers in organizational, political, and other communication-related professions; and prepares students for graduate school for those who wish to attain an advanced degree.
