Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies and how people interact within these contexts. Sociologists engage with the issues of our time: race, poverty, inequality, globalization, immigration, environmental change, gender, power, and many others. Through both the qualitative and quantitative collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, Sociology examines the hidden social forces that affect the course of our lives and our communities.

Field of Study Requirements: 18 Credit Hours

All majors must take the following 9 hours:

SOCI 1101 - Introduction to Sociology (3 Credit Hours)
SOCI 2101 - Career and Professional Development in Sociology (3 Credit Hours)
SOCI 2434 - Social Data Analysis (3 Credit Hours)
* A minimum grade of “C” is required.

B.S. in Sociology (No Concentration): 21 Credit Hours

Select 21 additional credit hours of advisor approved upper division (3000 or above) SOCI courses.

B.S. in Sociology with a Concentration in Human Services: 27 Credit Hours

In lieu of the general degree pathway in Sociology, students may choose to pursue a concentration in Human Services. See below for requirements.

Electives Hours: 24-30

Human Services concentration students select 24 hours of general electives.

General Sociology students select 30 hours of general electives.

Students must have a minimum of 39 hours of 3000+ level courses between major and elective courses.

Total Credit Hours: 124

Human Services Concentration: 27 Credit Hours

Human Services Concentration majors must complete a minimum of 21 hours in SOCI courses at the 3000 level or above. The 21 can incude elective hours in SOCI.

A minimum grade of “C” required in all sociology courses; if advisor recommends, one “D” is allowed if matched by “B” or higher in another sociology course.

Advisement

Undergraduate Academic Advisement at Georgia Southern is provided to all degree-seeking undergraduate students by professional advisors. Academic Advisors are located on all three Georgia Southern University campuses. Students are required to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
