The BS Math program is designed for students who wish to enter the workforce, including teaching, after graduation and for students who plan to pursue graduate study in mathematics or related areas upon completion of their undergraduate degree. Workforce positions include careers in the mathematical sciences, such as mathematician, statistician, and actuary, as well as positions in diverse fields that value the critical thinking and problem solving skills developed as a mathematical sciences major. Students in BS Math program will learn to solve problems in the areas of calculus, algebra, probability and statistics, and learn how to demonstrate logical argumentation and writing skills. The program provides a solid background in all areas of mathematics.

General Requirements (Core IMPACTS): 42 Credit Hours
- Mathematics and Quantitative Skills – Must take MATH 1112 , MATH 1113 , or MATH 1441
- Technology, Mathematics, and Sciences – Must take MATH 1441 if not taken in Mathematics and Quantitative Skills above
Additional Requirements: 4 Credit Hours
Field of Study Requirements: 18 Credit Hours
Carryover from Mathematics and Quantitative Skills or Technology, Mathematics, and Sciences(1) 3 of the 4 credit hours of MATH 1441 are taken in either Mathematics and Quantitative Skills or Technology, Mathematics and Sciences
Specific Requirements: 7-11 Credit Hours
- Lab Science Course in addition to those taken in Technology, Mathematics, and Sciences
- Foreign Language course(s) through 2001 or INTS 2130 if not completed above
Select one of the following Computer Sciences Courses or a course approved by Mathematics Advisor:
Major Requirements: 35 Credit Hours
General Electives: 14-18 Credit Hours
Select 12-24 credit hours of additional free Electives.
Carryover from Mathematics and Quantitative Skills(1) if MATH 1113 is taken in Mathematics and Quantitative Skills.
Students must complete at least 21 credit hours of upper division MATH course work overall.
Students must complete at least 39 credit hours of upper division course work overall.
Total Credit Hours: 124
1 While MATH 1441 Calculus I is 4 credit hours, only 3 credit hours will count toward fulfilling Mathematics and Quantitative Skills. The remaining credit hour will be applied toward Field of Study.
2 MATH 1441 Calculus I if not taken in Mathematics and Quantitative Skills, otherwise MATH 2242 Calculus II is recommended
Other Program Requirements
- A minimum grade of “C” is required for each CSCI, MATH, and STAT course taken in the major. This applies to all courses (lower and upper division). The mathematics major may not subsequently take for credit toward graduation a lower level MATH or STAT course after earning credit hour for a course that has the lower level course as a prerequisite (except by advisor’s permission).
- Students must successfully complete the Major Field Test as a departmental exit exam.
- Students must complete at least 21 credit hours of upper division MATH course work overall.
- Students must complete at least 39 credit hours of upper division course work overall.
Advisement
Undergraduate Academic Advisement at Georgia Southern is provided to all degree-seeking undergraduate students by professional advisors. Academic Advisors are located on all three Georgia Southern University campuses. Students are required to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
