The Department of History prepares students for success by building careers for the future on the foundations of the past. We are a unique department that emphasizes hands-on learning, global opportunities, and meaningful community engagement. Historians are the great contextualizers of society. They excavate and study the past, and they give us the context to better understand our future. That's why history majors are sought-after candidates for a wide variety of professions including business, law, education, public sector, and museum and library work.

Our faculty specialize in the exploration of Georgia history, women's history, maritime history, military history, digital history, and more. They are dynamic and engaging teachers and nationally and internationally known scholars.

In the History Department, students have the opportunity to take a range of courses to satisfy just about any historical interest. They also get opportunities to work in the field on historical sites with the hands-on experience they'll need in their careers.

HIST 1112 - World History II: Emergence of Modern Global Community (3 Credit Hours) ¹
HIST 2110 - U.S. A Comprehensive Survey (3 Credit Hours)
HIST 2111 - History of the United States to 1877 (3 Credit Hours)
HIST 2112 - Survey of US History II (3 Credit Hours)
HIST 2630 - Historical Methods (3 Credit Hours)
¹ History majors should take HIST 1111 in Institutional Priority and HIST 1112 in Field of Study. If not taken to satisfy these Core IMPACTS requirements, students must take these courses in Field of Study.

Select 9-12 credit hours from the following (including any 2000-level History Course):

HIST 4635 - Senior Seminar (3 Credit Hours) ¹
or HIST 4640 - Senior Capstone (3 Credit Hours)
¹HIST 4640 may be used as an additional upper division Major Elective only if HIST 4635 is used to satisfy this Major Requirement.

Major Electives: 21 Credit Hours

Select seven courses from the following options. At least nine (9) credit hours must include one course from three of the following four categories:¹

Topical Selections in History

Course may be assigned to one of the above categories depending on the course topic. Such topical selections need to submit a Petition for Academic Exception.

Minor - Required Credit Hours: 15

Select 15 credit hours of Minor (must be approved by advisor)

General Electives: 21 Credit Hours

Select 21 credit hours of General Electives.

Total Credit Hours: 124

Other Program Requirements

Must have a minimum grade of “C” in every History course beyond the core surveys.
39 Upper Division credits are required for a Bachelor’s Degree, and students may need to use general electives at the 3000-level or above to meet this requirement.

Advisement

Undergraduate Academic Advisement at Georgia Southern is provided to all degree-seeking undergraduate students by professional advisors. Academic Advisors are located on all three Georgia Southern University campuses. Students are required to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
