Degree Requirements: 36 Credit Hours
Admission RequirementsRegular AdmissionFor regular admission to the College of Graduate Studies to pursue work leading to this degree, the applicant must have: - Completed requirements for the Bachelor’s degree in a mathematical, science, or engineering discipline at a college or university accredited by an appropriate institutional accreditor.
- A complete résumé.
- Two letters of recommendation from academia.
- Successfully completed courses in calculus, linear algebra, and probability, and ability of reading and writing proofs.
Provisional AdmissionApplicants who do not meet admission requirements may be admitted provisionally but must take appropriate undergraduate courses before receiving regular admission. Admission of an applicant who is deemed marginal may require that an interview be conducted by a committee of graduate faculty members from the department. Non-Degree AdmissionNon-degree students are accepted on an individual basis as space is available. Program of Study
Students may select the Thesis or Non-Thesis option. Required Courses: 9 Credit Hours
These courses are required for all students in the MS Mathematics program. Program Concentration Area: 21 Credit Hours
MS Mathematics students must choose from a concentration in Mathematics or Statistics and Data Science. See below for details. Thesis Option: 6 Credit Hours
Students choosing this option must complete a thesis on a subject in their concentration that has been approved by the student’s advisor. The thesis must be defended before a student advisory committee. Non-Thesis Option: 6 Credit Hours
In lieu of a thesis, students may opt to complete 6 additional credit hours of coursework in their chosen Area of Concentration. Concentration in Mathematics
Required Courses: 6 Credit Hours
Electives in Mathematics: 15 Credit Hours
Selected graduate courses in Mathematics1. Concentration in Statistics and Data Science
Required Courses: 6 Credit Hours
Electives in Statistics and Data Science: 15 Credit Hours
Selected graduate courses in Statistics and Data Science.1 1Other approved courses outside the department that support the selected concentration area may also be considered. See the department website for information on acceptable courses for this concentration. A maximum of one elective course may be taken from outside the student’s concentration area. These must be approved by the graduate advisor.
Other Program Requirements
Students must complete a minimum of 18 credit hours at the 7000 level or above. Each these-option candidate for the Master of Science in Mathematics must complete a thesis on a subject in their concentration that has been approved by the student’s advisor. The thesis must be defended before a student advisory committee. The presentation part of the defense is open to the public. Advisement
Graduate students are advised by their program. Graduate students should reach out to their graduate program director for information regarding the structures in place to facilitate advisement.
