School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability


The School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability (SEES) is a multidisciplinary unit of COSM that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in both the Geosciences and Environmental Sciences.  Areas of focus among SEES faculty include petrology, paleontology, sedimentology, structural geology, tectonics, hydrogeology, biogeochemistry, environmental biology and geology, geospatial analysis, remote sensing, human-environment interactions, health geography, cultural geography, urban geography, tourism and economic geography, parasitology, marine science, coastal wetlands and natural history of the Coastal Plain.

The School also houses the James H. Oliver, Jr. Institute for Coastal Plain Science, an interdepartmental organization that promotes, in coordination with public and private partnerships, interdisciplinary research and education directed toward understanding the physical and biological resources occurring below the Fall Line and their sustainable use and management. The ICPS also assists with management of several natural history collections on campus and is the primary home of the U.S. National Tick Collection.

Undergraduate
The School offers two undergraduate degree programs, a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Geosciences (BS), and a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Sustainability Science (BS). It also offers minors in Geography, Geology, and Geographical Information Science, as well as the Environmental Sustainability Interdisciplinary Minor.

Graduate
In conjunction with the College of Graduate Studies, the School offers both a Master of Science in Environmental Science (a non-thesis degree), as well as a PhD in Environmental Science (a thesis research program).
