In the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, students will gain the knowledge and skills to make a difference in their workplaces, communities, and in the world. An education grounded in sociology or anthropology empowers students with the skills to identify problems and gather the relevant information to help find solutions.
Students in the department will have opportunities to gain real-life, job-related experience while earning their degree.
Undergraduate
A student graduating with a B.A. in Anthropology will be prepared to:
- Employ key research methods of anthropology that are appropriate to a research question;
- Engage with communities, companies, government agencies and NGOs to identify problems and develop solutions that are keyed to cultural contexts. ;
- Apply contemporary research from the field to resolve questions that pertain to employment, advocacy or the development of new projects. ;
- Demonstrate the ability to collect and use data from anthropological projects and make them accessible and practical in a variety of contexts.
- Enter graduate programs in Anthropology or the workforce in a wide range of applied fields and career paths, including law school and legal services; criminal justice; social work and social services; education; human resources; marketing, advertising, and market research; retail management; business administration; nonprofit management; healthcare administration and patient services.
A student graduating with a B.S. in Sociology will be prepared to:
- Use the sociological perspective to explain the impact of society on individuals and groups.
- Use sociological theories to expose how issues faced by individuals, families, organizations, and communities derive from social processes.
- Analyze scholarly research and develop structured reports of findings and limitations.
- Use theoretical and methodological knowledge to design and conduct research with real world applications.
- Enter graduate programs in areas including Sociology, Social Work, and Counseling, or the workforce in areas including Human Resources, nonprofit administration, marketing law school and legal services; criminal justice; social work and social services; education; human resources; marketing, advertising, and market research; retail management; business administration; nonprofit management; healthcare administration and patient services.
Graduate
The Master of Arts in Social Science offers students a multidisciplinary curriculum for understanding and investigating the social aspects of human behavior, social structure and culture in a global context. The program emphasizes the wide range of skills and perspectives that students need in order to analyze the historical, cultural, individual, and institutional conditions that shape our lives. A student will select an area of concentration within one of three areas - Anthropology, Political Science, or Sociology.
Students in the M.A. Social Science program develop a program of study in conjunction with their advisor tailored to their future career and educational goals.
