Department of Mechanical Engineering

Undergraduate

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers students an applied, laboratory-oriented education in Mechanical Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering curriculum is theoretical; yet hands-on and career oriented. Students gain expertise and practical knowledge in Mechanical Engineering in the major areas of mechanical devices and controls, robotics, environmental systems, mechanical design and analysis, material science and processing, renewable energy, and thermofluids science. In addition, students can gain real-world industry experience by participating in internships and co-ops. Students can also assist faculty in research projects, providing personalized opportunities for professional development. Research areas include automotive systems, robotics and human systems, automation and mechatronic systems, manufacturing systems, materials processing and modeling, renewable and sustainable energy, and combustion.

The Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

Graduate

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) degree program offered on the Statesboro campus of Georgia Southern integrates state-of-the-art technology and interdisciplinary and conceptual science with hands-on, operational skills preparation. The MSME program is designed to meet the global need for engineers with leadership skills and technical depth. Graduates gain valuable knowledge and are uniquely positioned to make immediate impacts in their careers. The program serves full-time students preparing for careers in Mechanical Engineering and currently employed professionals seeking advanced education to augment their existing skills and background. Thesis or non-thesis tracks are available within the program. Courses in the MSME program include vehicle dynamics, composite materials, renewable energy, fluid dynamics, combustion, engine development and performance, robot dynamics, and metal casting. Thesis or independent study research projects provide opportunities for individualized and in-depth study.

Graduate students are advised by their graduate program director:
