Middle Grades Education, B.S.Ed.

The Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. Certification Track program leads to initial middle-grades teacher certification (grades 4-8). This program is offered on the Statesboro Campus.

The program consists of coursework in the major field of study, methodology courses addressing academic instruction, and core coursework in professional education. 

Students in Middle Grades select two content concentration areas from English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. 

Degree Requirements: 124 Credit Hours


Additional admission requirements must be met to enter the Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. (Certification Track) program. (See B.S.Ed. Teacher Education Admission Requirements).Students seeking teacher certification are first admitted to the Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. Professional Studies (Non-Certification Track). Upon meeting B.S.Ed. teacher education admission requirements at the completion of Field of Study, students will be admitted to the certification track. Successful completion of all program requirements and all Georgia Professional Standards Commission certification requirements will prepare an individual to gain teacher certification in Georgia.

General Requirements (Core IMPACTS): 42 Credit Hours


(Technology, Mathematics, and Sciences) Students should select courses based upon chosen emphasis area course prerequisites.  Consult with academic advisor prior to registration. 

Additional Requirements: 4 Credit Hours


Field of Study Requirements: 18 Credit Hours


Other Courses for the Major


Each student must select two emphasis areas from Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Students who select Math and Science as their emphasis areas must take MATH 2008 , MATH 2232 , and ISCI 2002 . Other students should take three hours in the first emphasis area, three hours in the second emphasis area, and an additional three hours in one of their selected emphasis areas.

Certification or Non-Certification Track: 60 Hours

Professional Education: 12-27 Credit Hours

Major Requirements: 15-30 Credit Hours

Areas of Emphasis: 18 Credit Hours


Students will choose two areas of emphasis from the following:

  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies

This concentration leads to initial teacher certification in Georgia. 

Program Admission Criteria

See B.S.Ed. Teacher Education Admission Requirements  

  • Must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program and qualify for a Georgia Preservice Certificate

Other Program Requirements

  • Must meet all requirements for retention in the Teacher Education Program and qualify for a Georgia Preservice Certificate.
  • Must earn a minimum grade of “C” in all courses in Field of Study courses, the teaching field, and professional education; and maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.
  • Must earn a minimum grade of “B’” or higher in Introduction to SPED in Middle and Secondary Grades, SPED 3332  or SPED 3333 .
  • Must successfully complete all field experiences.
  • Must take courses in proper sequence.
  • Must meet requirements for admission to Student Teaching (See catalog section, Admission to Student Teaching).
  • Must successfully complete assessments identified at each program transition point.

Major Requirements/ Methods Requirements: 15 Credit Hours


Methods requirements are specific to the certification track concentration. 

Emphasis Areas: 18 Credit Hours


Nine Credit hours are required for each emphasis area. Choose two of the following areas:

Professional Studies Non-Certification Track


This concentration does NOT lead to initial teacher certification in Georgia. 

Program Admission Criteria

  • Must meet all University Admission Requirements.
  • This program does NOT lead to teacher certification.  Upon meeting teacher education program admission requirements, those seeking teacher certifcation will move into the Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. (Certification Track) program. 

Other Program Requirements

  • Must identify a career path with their academic advisor.

To graduate with Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. Professional Studies (Non-Certification), a student must: 

  • successfully complete the program of study as outlined in the catalog;
  • be in good standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. 

Major Requirements: 30 Credit Hours


Must include at least 21 credit hours of upper-division courses.  

Complete 3-30 credit hours from the Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. (Certification track) program or from the following content areas:  ENGL;GEOG; HIST; ISCI; PSYC; READ; SOCI (advisor approval required). 

Emphasis Areas: 18 Credit Hours


Nine credit hours are required for each emphasis area. Choose two of the following areas:

Advisement


Undergraduate Academic Advisement at Georgia Southern is provided to all degree-seeking undergraduate students by professional advisors. Academic Advisors are located on all three Georgia Southern University campuses. Students are required to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
