The Ed.S. in Reading Education online program is designed to meet the current demands of teachers in grades K-12 who possess or are eligible for a Professional Level Five Certificate in Reading Education, Elementary Education, Special Education, or Middle Grades Education as they pursue graduate preparation beyond the Master’s degree. Candidates in the program complete content specific requirements in reading education.
The program requires 33 semester hours and is unique in that it provides opportunities to:
- Collaborate with others across disciplines;
- Explore teacher leadership opportunities and develop leadership skills;
- Apply and extend content knowledge and pedagogical skills through the examination of curriculum and instruction issues and research;
- Continue development of technology skills and develop skills in using technology to impact and assess student learning; and
- Conduct action research related to reading education

Degree Requirements: 33 Credit Hours
Certificate upgrade information: The educator who holds a level five certificate in Reading, Middle Grades Reading, Early Childhood Education, or Special Education with a cognitive area in Reading will qualify for a level six certificate upgrade upon successful completion of all program requirements. Admission RequirementsRegular- Complete requirements for a master’s degree from a college or university accredited by an appropriate institutional accreditor.
- Possess or be eligible for a Georgia level five certificate in an eligible concentration area, or possess an equivalent out-of-state teaching certificate in the concentration area. Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Georgia level five teaching certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain certificate. Candidates with an out-of-state certificate will not receive Georgia certification upon program completion.
- Present a minimum 3.0 (4.0 scale) ) grade point average on graduate work.
- Submit a personal statement of purpose, not to exceed 200 words, that identifies the applicant’s reasons for pursuing graduate study and how admission into the program relates to the applicant’s professional aspirations.
ProvisionalApplicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. Provisional students must earn grades of “B” or higher in their first nine (9) credits of course work after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the department to be converted to regular status. Core Requirements Credit Hours: 24
Content Specific Requirements Credits Hours: 6
Ed.S. candidates must complete the Content Specific Requirements in Reading Education. Free Electives Credit Hours: 3
Select 3 credit hours from the following: EDUF, EDUC, READ, TCLD The course must be 6000 level or above. |
