Communication Studies, B.S.

Location(s): Statesboro, Armstrong-Savannah


The Communication Studies Major (B.S.) is to provide students with an experiential learning environment which develops critical understanding, appreciation, and strategic application of the symbolizing processes which form and mobilize human activity, including but not limited to spoken, written and nonverbal communication in interpersonal, public and professional contexts, guided by theoretical, practical, aesthetic, and ethical models that fosters respect for cultural diversity in all its forms and values dialogic communication in an increasingly international marketplace and intercultural global community by: enhancing students’ sense of personal worth, ability to problem-solve individually and collaboratively, and social responsibility to others far beyond the university, local and regional communities; establishing for students a well- supported pathway to successful, productive careers in organizational, political, and other communication related professions; and, preparing students for graduate school for those who wish to attain an advanced degree.

Additional Upper Division Requirements: 18-20 Credit Hours

Upper Division Electives: 9-12 Credit Hours


  • Select 9-12 Credit Hours of Upper Division Communication Arts Electives (other than Communication Studies courses).

General Electives: 10-15 Credit Hours


  • Select 10-15 credit hours of general electives.

Total Credit Hours: 124


Other Program Requirements


  • Students must make a minimum grade of “C” in each Communication Arts class to receive credit for that course.
  • Students must have a total institution GPA of 2.5 before enrolling for internship credit hours (COMS 4791 Communication Studies Internship ).

Advisement

Undergraduate Academic Advisement at Georgia Southern is provided to all degree-seeking undergraduate students by professional advisors. Academic Advisors are located on all three Georgia Southern University campuses. Students are required to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
