This course focuses on the encounters among diverse peoples, and the social, economic, and power relations that developed from these contacts. There are three primary aims of this course: 1. To examine the exploration, exploitation, and colonization of North America from the perspectives of both early modern Europeans and Native Americans. We will be employing the hybrid discipline of ethnohistory to examine the Westward enterprises of the Spanish, French, Dutch, and English, their impact upon the native cultures, as well as the impact of the native cultures upon them, and their success in transplanting European culture to the New World.
