ARTH 7237 - Contemporary Art (3 Credit Hours) Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Through lectures and class discussion, this course explores the development of contemporary art from the 1970s to the present day. We will investigate issues pertaining to contemporary art such as place, memory, consumption, spirituality, identity, power, stories, loss and desire, time, humor, ecology and protest. Course content also considers the nature of “mega-exhibitions” and the changing role of art, artists, and curators as cultural activists; art as the product of economic relations between parties with different vested interests in the material object; visual strategies used in the media and advertising; and the impact of technology on contemporary culture in general and art in particular.
