Middle Grades Education Professional Studies (Non-Certification Track), B.S.Ed.


Degree Requirements: 124 Credit Hours


The B.S.Ed. degree with a major in Middle Grades Education Professional Studies (Non-Certification Track) provides students who are interested in education the opportunity to take coursework focused on middle grades education content areas. The degree allows for choice in several areas leading to a broad background. When accepted to the University, all Middle Grades Education majors are placed in the Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. Professional Studies (Non-Certification Track) program. This track does NOT lead to teacher certification. Upon meeting teacher education program admission requirements, those seeking teacher certification in Middle Grades Education will move into the Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. (Certification Track) program.

General Requirements (Core Areas A - E) Credit Hours: 42

Other Courses for the Major


Each student must select two emphasis areas. The first emphasis area should be Science or Social Studies. The second emphasis area should be Language Arts or Math. (Students who select other combinations of emphasis areas may have extended time to graduation.) Students who select Science as an emphasis area must take ISCI 2001  and ISCI 2002 , and three hours in their other selected emphasis area. Other students should take three hours in the first emphasis area, three hours in the second emphasis area, and an additional three hours in one of their selected emphasis areas.

Nine credit hours are required for each emphasis area. 

Major Requirements Credit Hours: 30


Must include at least 21 credit hours of upper division courses. 

Complete 3-30 credit hours from the Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. (Certification Track) program or from the following content areas: ENGL; GEOG; GEOL; HIST; ISCI; ITEC; PSYC; READ; SOCI (advisor approval required). 

Total Credit Hours: 124


Program Admission Criteria

  • Must meet all University Admission Requirements. 
  • This program does NOT lead to teacher certification. Upon meeting teacher education program admission requirements, those seeking teacher certification will move into the Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. (Certification Track) program. 

Other Program Requirements

  • Must identify a career path with their academic advisor. 

To graduate with Middle Grades Education B.S.Ed. Professional Studies (Non-Certification), a student must:

  • successfully complete the program of study as outlined in the catalog;
  • be in good standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. 

Advisement

Undergraduate Academic Advisement at Georgia Southern is provided to all degree-seeking undergraduate students by professional advisors. Academic Advisors are located on all three Georgia Southern University campuses. Students are required to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
