Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (TCLD/ESOL) M.Ed. (Online)

Degree Requirements: 39 Credit Hours


Certificate Upgrade Information: An educator who holds a level four Georgia teaching certificate in ESOL will qualify for a level five certificate upgrade upon successful completion of all program requirements.

Admission Requirements

Regular Admission

  1. Complete requirements for a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or the equivalent at a recognized international university.
  2. Teaching certification is not required for admission. A teaching certificate and/or professional experience working with historically underrepresented populations is strongly preferred. Candidates who possess a Georgia level four teaching certificate in an eligible concentration area will qualify for a level five certificate upgrade upon program completion. This program will not certify candidates to teach in the state of Georgia.
  3. Present a cumulative 2.50 (4.0 scale) grade point average or higher on all undergraduate and graduate work combined.
  4. Submit a completed “Disclosure and Affirmation Form” that addresses misconduct disclosure, the Code of Ethics for Educators, and tort liability.
  5. Submit a personal statement of purpose, not to exceed 250 words, that identifies the applicant’s career goals, professional aspirations, and experiences or goals for working with historically underrepresented populations .

Provisional Admission

Applicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. Provisional degree candidates must earn grades of “B” or higher in their first nine (9) hours of course work after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the department to be converted to regular status.

Additional Information

  • If you are a Georgia certified teacher or administrator and choose the TCLD/ESOL track for US contexts, you will earn your ESOL endorsement and become eligible for a level 5 certificate upgrade upon successful program completion.
  • If you are a Georgia certified teacher or administrator who has already earned an ESOL endorsement, you can attempt Prior Learning Assessments in order to potentially have 6 credits applied to this degree program. You will also become eligible for a level 5 certificate upgrade upon successful program completion.

2 These courses are part of the Curriculum and Pedagogy for Social Justice Graduate certificate intended for educators working in culturally diverse contexts.

3 These courses are part of the Applied Linguistics/TESOL Graduate certificate intended for educators working in English as a Foreign Language in international contexts outside the USA.
