HIST 5230 - Advertising and Culture (3 Credit Hours) Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Surveys the business and practice of selling consumer goods in the United States from the nineteenth century to the present with analysis of how advertising became an economic and cultural force, and a cornerstone of the consumer culture. Topics include the development of mass marketing, product brands, persuasive advertising, mail-order catalogs, department stores, as well as the relationship of consumerism to gender, ethnicity, race, social class, religion, and youth.
