The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (B.I.S.) degree provides opportunities for students who are interested in combining a liberal arts background with some degree of specialization. It offers a solid core curriculum program along with the freedom to choose from a wide range of concentrations.

While the Interdisciplinary Studies degree allows for study in several areas, it is organized to provide an academically sound program with carefully planned concentrations. The student who earns this degree will have achieved a broad-based education in a fully accredited program.

Area F - Courses Appropriate to Major: Credit Hours: 18


Select 18 credit hours of courses appropriate to Concentration and Minor programs of study from the following:

Major Requirements: Credit Hours: 51-54


For the major, students may choose one of the following two options: 1

  • Three (3) concentrations of 18 credit hours each from the list of approved concentrations below.
  • Two (2) concentrations of 18 credit hours each from the list of approved concentrations below and one (1) minor (refer to minors and interdisciplinary minors in Catalog).

Approved Concentrations: 2

Elective: Credit Hours: 4-7


  • Select 4-7 credit hours of Electives4

Total Credit Hours: 124


1 Of the total number of credit hours for the major, 42 of the credit hours must be at the upper division level.

The individual emphasis is for students who have previously earned credit that has been accepted by the University in an area of study at the 3000 level or higher that can be used as a concentration once approved and submitted by an academic advisor for approval to the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. The individual emphasis is not considered available for use towards graduation credit until fully approved. Students in the face to face or fully online BIS program may seek to have Individual emphasis approved on campuses where their specific, declared BIS major is offered.

3 Concentrations may only be available for students who have as their major the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies or the Online Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Other Program Requirements

  • Students must have a 2.0 total institutional GPA overall and a total GPA of 2.0 in each concentration (or minor).
  • Students must choose concentrations and minors from different disciplines.

Other Program Information

Foreign Language - Although foreign language is optional in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree, students who wish may include Foreign Language in Area F, as well as choose a minor or concentration in Foreign Language.

Advisement

Undergraduate Academic Advisement at Georgia Southern is provided to all degree-seeking undergraduate students by professional advisors. Academic Advisors are located on all three Georgia Southern University campuses. Students are required to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
