The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) program at Georgia Southern University delivers a core curriculum with the freedom to choose from a variety of concentrations areas from across the University. This multi-disciplinary degree is tailored to students interested in completing their degree by creating a degree program best suited for their career or educational goals.
While the Interdisciplinary Studies degree allows for study in several areas, it is organized to provide an academically sound program with carefully planned concentrations. The student who earns this degree will have achieved a broad-based education in a fully accredited program.

For the major, students may choose one of the following two options:

Students in the BIS to MAT Special Education Pathway
MUST choose both of the following concentrations in order to complete the pathway and be eligible to apply for the Masters in Teaching Special Education program.
- English Language Arts Concentration
- Human Development and Learning Concentration
MUST choose the following Minor in order to complete the pathway and be eligible to apply for the Masters in Teaching Special Education program.

This concentration is designed for learners interested in analyzing and creating texts. Learners in this concentration can pursue coursework in literature and writing, including professional and creative writing, as well as opportunities in linguistics, film studies, and editing. Note: Learners interested in the courses that were formerly a part of the Writing concentration can find those courses here.

The concentration in English Language Arts requires a total of 18 credit hours. Students are required to complete 6 upper division READ and ENGL courses. READ 7131 is REQUIRED for students to complete the BIS to MAT in Special Education pathway. Students may then select five courses for which the prerequisites have been met from the list of courses approved for the concentration. Humanities Concentration
The Humanities Concentration requires a total of 18 credit hours.
Humanities Concentration Elective Courses
Select six (3 credit hours) courses, with at least three different prefixes, from the following list. At least five of these courses (15 credit hours) for the concentration must be upper division (3000 or above). Courses may be selected from the list of courses below approved for the concentration. Other courses may be approved by the student’s advisor in consultation with the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities.
Individual Emphasis Concentration *
The Individual Emphasis concentration requires a total of 18 credit hours of courses specifically approved by the Academic Advisor. The Individual Emphasis is for students who may be interested in proposing a set of courses, either previously accepted by the University, generally at the 3000 level or higher, or taking a set of courses, or a combination of the two that can be used as an 18 hour concentration once approved and submitted by an academic advisor for approval to the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. The individual emphasis is not considered available for use towards graduation credit until fully approved. Students in the face to face or fully online BIS program may seek to have Individual Emphasis approved on campuses where their specific, declared BIS major is offered. The student may be required to provide justification for the courses to be included in the Individual Emphasis. * This Concentration is available for those students wishing to study FULLY ONLINE International Studies Concentration

Students must complete 15 credit hours 3000-level and above courses from the following list pending completion of necessary pre-requisites: Non-science majors must choose at least two courses taught within the College of Science & Mathematics. SUST 4730 Practicum in Environmental Sustainability is a capstone project in sustainability, conducted with a faculty mentor (generally in the home department) and coordinated by the Director of the Institute for Coastal Plain Science (ICPS). Students MUST contact the Director of the Institute for Coastal Plain Science at the beginning of the semester BEFORE the practicum, in order to allow time to develop, arrange, and approve a suitable project. - Students must have a 2.0 total institutional GPA overall and a total GPA of 2.0 in each concentration (or minor).
- Students must choose concentrations and minors from different disciplines. [i.e. a student may not declare a Sociology concentration and a Sociology minor.]
- Students must complete a minimum of 39 upper division credit hours.
Students in the BIS to MAT in Special Education
- must meet specific requirements in Area F;
- declare specific concentrations and minors to meet the requirements for admission to the MAT program;
- complete the following graduate-level courses [which may be in the required concentrations or as electives] in order to complete the pathway and be eligible to apply for the Masters in Teaching Special Education program.
Advisement
Undergraduate Academic Advisement at Georgia Southern is provided to all degree-seeking undergraduate students by professional advisors. Academic Advisors are located on all three Georgia Southern University campuses. Students are required to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
